According to the research of Juan Revilla, orbit-crossers which are not locked into’ mean motion resonance with other bodies have unstable orbits, as they will eventually approach very closely the planet whose orbit they are crossing. An ‘encounter’ occurs when the Minor Planet passes within less than 1 AU, causing the Minor Planet’s orbit to change drastically or ‘catastrophically’, making accurate calculation impossible. Such an orbit is called ‘chaotic’, and this characterizes the orbits of most Centaurs. Thus their orbital behaviour in times far past or future can only be estimated within probabilities, taking into account the close physical approaches to Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Here follow some notes on Chiron and the other Centaurs mentioned in this book, examined across the period from 4500 BC to 5200 AD.

Positions of Chiron before 720 AD are not considered accurate, and therefore many ephemerides do not offer information for prior years. Chiron’s orbit is the most unstable of all the Centaurs.
